Inserter Lead Operator

Position Overview

Department: Mail Department
Reports to: Director of Mail Operations

Fort Orange Press is seeking an experienced, reliable, tech-savvy, Inserter Lead Operator who wants to work on the most state-of-the-art equipment available. The Inserter Lead Operator is responsible for setting up and maintaining inserting equipment, overseeing sorters, and maintaining mailing quality.  The Inserter Lead Operator will also set up and operate one of the resident inkjet devices according to specifications on the job ticket.   • 2+ years experience as an inserter operator (lead operator experience preferred).
  • Prior supervisor experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of postal sortation, traying, sacking, and palletizing mail.
  • Capable of setting up and troubleshooting W+D inserter, inline feeder, and mail strapper.
  • Have a firm understanding of the BCC software controls and adjustments.
  • Capable of demonstrating an understanding of class and category of mail.
  • Attention to detail and quality assurance is a must.


  • Run match mailing equipment, sort mail, and tray all mail products.
  • Oversee inserting quality, insert order, assuring barcodes meet postal specifications, and do not tap out.
  • Read the job ticket and follow the directions on the job ticket.
  • Secure supervisor sign-off of inkjet image before processing job.
  • Regular maintenance and cleaning of the inserter, in-line folder, and strapper.
  • Troubleshoot problems and perform minor repairs.
  • Weekly inventory of postal trays, lids, skids, and machine straps provided to supervisor before the end of shift each Friday.
  • Ensure the inserter area is clean and hazard-free.
  • Help out in bindery when time permits.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
